AKPU'S MAJOR ROAD (2)

AKPU'S MAJOR ROAD: PERISCOPING THE WONDERS OF OUR SILENTLY WORKING "WONDERS"

By Okey Emmanuel ODEWAIWAI

The Bible tells us that when God created the earth and situated man in the first ever known community - the garden of Eden - he commanded the man to _work the land, Genesis 2:15._ The lesson is that it's the original intention of God to use man to build his community.

Truth is that God has gifted us individually, in various ways, as instruments for building man's society. Unfortunately, some people, rather than build, make themselves tools for destroying the society.

Today, let me focus on those that build in Akpu - with special reference to the Akpu's key road - the Orie-Akpu/Nkwa Road. At the back of the heart of every true Akpu man is the dream to get this road very motorable. It is indeed the number one agenda in the politics and economy of the town.

Last year, exactly about this time, the road was almost impassable due to flooding from Nkwo Akpu to Nkwa River. But some effort has improved the state of the road. Most inspiring is the effort of Mr Vincent Onwubiko, aka _Mr Wonders_ . The flood management work he's doing in front of his house - stretching over 300 meters - is amazing. The two sided gutters with state of the art concreting is awesome. But more amazing is the promise of restoring the original level of the road - now at the depth of about four feet and requiring serious sand filling. Am not a road engineer but I know it's a project that would challenge the likes of Julius Begger.

"Am assuring you that my brother is ready to sand fill this place to march with the height of the gutter", boasted Mr Nathaniel Onwubiko, Wonder's younger brother supervising the work. Natide (Nathaniel's popular name) said this while granting an interview during one of his supervising roles at the site.

The confidence he exuded made me trust Mr Wonders the more. And what came to my mind on hearing this is the Igbo man's saying that _îké dî n'àkpàntutu, ovu jî égbú agwó_ (meaning that strength is in dimensions, reason why the hawk kills the snake).

It might also interest you to hear that the gutter job being executed by Wonders has provided a lot of income for a good number of Akpu youths who are being used for the job. This is the quiet side of this wonderful philanthropy.

Let me also acknowledge the efforts of other Akpu citizens who have played notable roles in getting this road a thorough fare. First is Hon Uchenna Nwankwo, àká Anakuroji. His initial effort opened up the road for vehicles to move through. Anakuroji did the pioneering earth work with caterpillar and turned the once-upon-a-time track road to a motorable form. Kudos, Hon Anakuroji.

Another person that deserves my kudos is Mr Mbamala Onuigbo. Mbamala has a number of times deployed labour, finance and carterpillar towards fixing the road. A big thumbs up for our _nwà obodo-oyibo._

And, of course, our able Akpu youths have not lagged behind any time they hear Mr Raymond's public notice for ólû obodo on this same road. Ûmû Ikorobià, my God shall continue to bless your strength why we continue to pray for God's intervention using the government on this number one Akpu Road.
