INVESTMENT IN OIL PALM TREE PLANTATION

DURING HYPERINFLATION, INVESTMENT IN CASH CROPS LIKE PALM TREES IS THE ANSWER -  ECONOMIC EXPERT

By Okey Emmanuel Odewaiwai

An economic expert, Dr Paul Uzum has said that keeping money in the bank is the most stupid thing to do in times like this when there's hyperinflation.

Indeed, inflation in Nigeria today is turning millionaires to paupers as our Naira is now sharing value with tissue papers. There's palpable fear in the land on how to save our hard earned currency. Many are buying Dollars - the reason the dollar is turning to gold and souring up in value. But the economist is equally sounding danger signal as one single policy by the government can equally endanger your dollar savings.

Investment in landed property has become one solid beacon of hope and palm oil plantation unarguably is one angle that will guarantee continuous returns annually without being watered down by inflation.

The beauty of palm plantation is its very low maintenance cost. And, apart from land, the investment cost is equally meager compared to investing in other landed properties like housing.

For example with less than N500,000 today you can own a palm plantation of about 500 trees. This amount will cover cost of labour and other sundry costs. But the same N500,000 cannot buy you 50 bags of cement today!

In case you don't know, 500 trees of oil palm will yield an average of 10,000 heads per annum when fully matured (average of 20 heads per tree with tenera species). At N2,000 per head, we are talking of N20m return per annum!

Another beauty of palm oil tree business is that, today, people are leasing it on annual basis. A cousin of mine last year leased a palm plantation farm in Ufuma, Orumba North, last year at N500,000. The previous year (2022), the same farm was leased out at N400,000 and in 2021 it was at N350,000. This is talking of the traditional stock of palm trees in the forest whose yield is not anywhere near our hybrid stock.

The leasing opportunity will be very useful to investors who may not find time (or have trusted persons) to harvest the palms by themselves.

Furthermore, the improvement in the yield of palm oil with hybrid palms that start fruiting after 3 years gives the investor mouthwatering returns. The attached video is a true life testimony of our hybrid tenera palm that's just 3 years old with its fruit touching the ground.

Now that we are waiting for the rains (from next month - March), it's time to start making preparations for your palm plantation. Now is the time to start preparing the land against sowing the seedlings in May.
