Rising after a very interactive induction cum orientation programme organized for the newly constituted committees of Akpu Progressive Union, APU, the executives went for a facility tour of the town's health center.
The decision to visit the health center arose from a worrisome report which said that the all important health facility does not have a functional toilet. This report got all the attendees disturbed. The Vice President General 2 (V-PG2), Mr Titus Iheukwumere Okoli who conducted the programme, with other officials present - including Pastor Tony Okeke, APU Secretary General - took immediate decision to see things for themselves in the Health Center.
Accompanied by some members of the Committee on Health, the team met on ground the newly posted Nursing Sister in charge of the center. She took them round the facility. It was confirmed that there is a 3-room house for toilet and bathroom but the toilet system was no longer in existence. In fact, the house was turned to dumping ground and filled with obsolete hospital equipment and stuff. The visiting team instructed the committee members to immediately clear the place and pick any useful items for proper keeping in the new building. It was also observed that the soak away pit was either not in existence or may have been filled with solid waste. For that, the committee was asked to get a plumber who would advise on how to set up a functional toilet system in the health center.
Other distressed portions of the Health Center included the backyard which requires flood management, a cracked fence at the backyard, a very tall palm tree from adjourning neighborhood threatening the facility. The water supply facility was also found not working.
Lastly, the team commended the Èkenato (Women Wing of APU) who had put in so much in the upkeep of the Health Center. They noted that the gigantic hospital building which is facilitated by the Èkenato group would go a long way in solving the housing needs at the center.
Consequently, the committee on health was charged to quickly do a report to the APU Exco especially on these save-our-soul situations observed during the facility visit.
It is believed that with the reinvigorated Committee on Health of APU, our people would no longer find any reason to leave the Health Center and patronize those of the neighboring communities. This is more so as the new Nursing Sister in charge of the facility is said to be better qualified for the job.
