A HAPPY TEACHER

MY TYPICAL DAY'S DIARY AS A HAPPY TEACHER
    By: Vivian Emmanuel E

Teaching is my profession, and am happy doing it. So every night I look forward to the next day's business. Here is my typical day's diary:

 5.00am

- (q-ri-ri-ri-m!, q-ri-ri-ri-m!). That's my alarm clock. Yes, I won't want to be late at school! I have to be there before 7am. So I quickly wake up, say my prayers and in 10 minutes dash out to wake the children up; then do the morning chores. Everything is rush! rush! rush! Even the children know that - and they comply; of course they have no choice.

6:20- 6:45am:
It is dressing time. Am a lady, anyway. So I reach my make-up pack, apply the necessaries and select the appropriate dress for the day. Each day has clothes that suit it. That I know beforehand.

6:45 - 6:55am.
Dash to school. As usual I beat the resumption time, clock-in before 7am, and walk straight to my class - my joyful KG1 class. Yes oh! I love those babies. So I look forward to their resumption.

7.00 - 7.40am:
Sit on my chair. Again I make another short prayer - "God give me and my little angels sweet moments in class. Help me to teach well, and help them to understand.  Help their parents to pay their school fees and lesson money. Give us peaceful and blissful atmosphere in Grand School today. And help me not to offend the school management. Amen!" I don't have to pray much since it is few minutes to prayer time for the whole school. Before that comes, I prepare my table and make sure the class is in proper shape for the day's work.

7.40 - 8.00am:
School assembly: praises, prayers, National anthem, School anthem, Announcement. Exaltation for the day. All said and done, then I match with my children into the classroom.

8.00am - 10.30am:
First set of lessons. Of course am prepared. Lesson note was ready before the first day of the week.
No shaking! Am already familiar with the teaching methodology,  not after 5 years in the business.
So action!
NURSERY EDUCATIONAL CHART
Teaching starts.
(Stage 1) Apply technique 1- Entry behaviour. I evaluate the pupils using the PLACEMENT EVALUATION TECHNIQUE to assure myself that they are set to accept the lesson. Ask few questions on related topics already learned. Never mind, they are small kids (2-3years), so I take time to chat them up. We sing a number of rhymes, especially those related to the lesson to be taught. By 10 minutes we are done.

(Stage 2) Introduce my new topic: Pick the study materials, again arouse their interest to learn, then hit the iron while it's hot. Yea! I can see they are following. Many of them are eagre to answer my questions. I still remember the Diagnostic Evaluation Technique they taught us during my professional training. It's working! But I notice a few of the kids dont quite follow. So I approach them one by one to help them catch up. By 15 minutes we are done with this stage.

(Stage 3) Class work: The kids should consolidate their learning by practicing a few class work.

10:00 - 10:30am:
Hmm! Break time. Teacher, children, everybody needs rest. Teaching is not easy oh! Learning is not easy, too! So we all need rest. Children are given food to eat and walk around the class to relax. After, the classroom is tidied up, getting set for the second part of the day's learnings.

10:30 - 2:30:
Two or more lessons are taken. They are topics taken in playful mood. Of course the kids should not be overstretched intellectually.  Its time to work on their affective and psychomotive domains. Please don't mind the jargons jarry. They are the terms we use in the profession to mean learning behavours that have to do with the learner participating physically in the learning process.

2.30 - 4.00:
Dismisal, lesson and going home - for the children, not me oh!. I have to wait till 4:30pm to earn  my salary - the 'koko', my friend will say.

4.00 - 5.00:
Rounding off the day's work - mark class work, prepare lesson note for coming week. Then it's time to go!
It's a hard day's work but it is worth it. As the saying goes, there is dignity in labour.
